Hi Mama.

Let’s talk postpartum.

First things first: Bring back the village.

During pregnancy, we get so caught up in preparing for labor and birth that we often forget to prepare for what happens after baby arrives. Traditionally, parents would be surrounded by their village post birth to support all the postpartum adjustments: navigating your new role as a parent, getting to know your baby, learning feeding/sleeping/bonding strategies, and balancing all your responsibilities.

My name is Yaya, and I started Yaya Mama to give parents back the village.

Yaya Mama packages provide tailor made, wrap-around postpartum care to you and your family so you can ease into your new life with strength and confidence. I support families throughout the postpartum year, in Philadelphia and beyond.

I believe that a supported, restful postpartum experience has life-long benefits to parents and their children.

Let’s expand your village together.

What is a postpartum doula?

Why hire a postpartum doula?

The overwhelm of chaos, joy, and huge hormonal fluctuations can put new parents in a place of sheer survival. But successful newborn care starts with successful self care. So beyond caring for your new baby, your postpartum doula will help you get back to the basics: sleep, eat, and drink water. Taking a mental health break, a nap, or getting a full night of rest can change your entire experience. Scheduling postpartum doula visits provides new parents with the physical, emotional, and informational support they need in the first few months after childbirth.

What does a postpartum doula do?

  • Hold and comfort the baby so you can shower, eat, and sleep (or spend quality time with an older sibling).

  • Provide education on newborn care such as changing diapers (cloth and disposables), breast/chest and bottle feeding, care of umbilical cord stump and circumcision site, baby wearing, bathing, dressing, soothing, etc.

  • Offer informational and emotional support and screen for signs of postpartum mood disorders and provides professional resources.

  • Help you with your physical recovery from birth, whether vaginal or cesarean/surgical.

  • Assist in breastfeeding by helping to determine when baby has a good latch, suggesting position changes, advising on safe milk handling guidelines, and providing resources for professional in-home or virtual lactation consultants.

  • Prepare nutritious meals full of protein, good fats, micronutrients, and galactagogues (foods which promote lactating, for breast or chest feeding parents) while following your unique diet requirements and the guidelines presented in “The First Forty Days”.

  • Perform light housework duties such as folding laundry and doing dishes. There's nothing like a fresh set of sheets to help have a great rest!

I also serve many families during 3-8 weeks, when babies tend to ramp up their fussy times.

  • Absolutely! My Sleep Support packages help parents struggling with sleep deprivation with their new baby/twins. I offer both overnight care as well as problem solving visits during the day (when your brain can plan!).

I respond to babies sensitively and gently, and prioritize your parenting goals. Sleep Support is the most requested service I have—book early if you can!
